I think we would add real value if the SITE VERSION command would make it into the next release. The output should be two version numbers a the internal gridftp version number and b the GT version number if gridftp is iunstalled together with GT. If it is a standalone installation the GT version should return 0. Having this would enable us in future to react more easily on semantic changes related to use, and order of the protocol commands.
I've added the following command for 4.0.1: SITE VERSION 200 2.1 (gcc32dbg, 1117216335-1) gridftp server version (flavor, dirt timestamp-branch tag) This is the same info that is in the default 220 banners. We can't print the gt release version -- there is no way to programatically know that, and it is fairly meaningless (someone could install a 4.0 gridftp server into a 3.2 globus_location and it would work just fine). FYI, here are the gridftp server release versions to gt release mappings: gridftp server gt 1.12 or lower 2.4.3 or lower 1.17 3.2.0, 3.2.1 2.0 4.0.0 2.1 4.0.1
